About Us

The Lance is an independent, student-run, not-for-profit, digital multimedia publication at the University of Windsor in Wawiiahtanan Ziibii/Wawiiatanong. It is located on the traditional territory of the Three Fires Confederacy of First Nations, comprised of the Ojibway, the Odawa, and the Potawatomi. It aims to publish stories that are relevant and related to UWindsor student life — especially ones that would otherwise be overlooked by corporate or outside publications — and report on local, national, and international issues that are of interest to the UWindsor community.

The Lance began publication with volume 31, issue 12 on February 26th, 1959, and continued the previous student newspaper, the Purple and White, which had been founded in 1924. The name was changed because in 1956, gold was added to the university colours along with purple and white. The senior basketball team (and soon the rest of UWin’s sports teams) had begun using “The Lancers” as a team name, and “since the lance is the weapon of the lancer, the thought was that it would be appropriate as the voice or weapon, so to speak, of Assumption students” (February 26th, 1959, page 2).

For over 50 years, the Lance covered a variety of campus political, cultural, and sporting events, as well as broader issues such as access to education, university funding, politics, elections, corruption scandals, alternative and counterculture movements, drug addiction, crime, the environment, gender equality, and racial discrimination. Student views on national and international stories are also abundant.

In 2016, the University of Windsor Students Alliance (UWSA) decided to stop publishing a print version of the Lance; the last print issue was volume 88, no. 26, which appeared on April 6th, 2016. During the school year 2016-2017, publication was completely suspended. From September 2017 to April 2019, the Lance was nominally published online at http://uwindsorlance.com

In March 2026, The Lance was resurrected by a team of five students determined to keep its legacy alive. The mission is to preserve what made this student magazine so great in the past - keeping student voices heard and impactful. Our goal with The Lance is to entertain, inform, and inspire the community throughout whatever the future may bring.
